Hand-Building vs. Wheel-Throwing

Finished handmade bowls and plates arranged on a table

Every beginner asks it, usually while eyeing the wheels with equal parts longing and fear: should I start with hand-building or wheel-throwing? The honest answer is that both roads lead to the same shelf — but they feel very different under your hands.

The wheel: thrilling, humbling, fast

Wheel-throwing gives you a finished bowl in a single evening — once centering clicks. The learning curve is steep for two sessions, then gloriously flat. If you love rhythm, repetition and functional ware, start here with our four-week basics course.

Hand-building: free, forgiving, expressive

Pinch, coil and slab work at your pace with no spinning deadline. Sculptural thinkers, perfectionists and anyone who wants truly one-off forms thrive here. Our hand-building afternoon covers all three methods in one go.

Most of our long-term members do both — wheel for mugs, hand-building for everything the wheel refuses to imagine.

Still torn? Book a private session and try both in one evening. The clay doesn’t mind.
